Your wedding day is very special. Everyone involved with the ceremony forms a part of the overall plan and should be contacted a few days in advance to check final arrangements. However some things only happen on the day.

Arriving at the Ceremony

Tell people where they can park
Ensure that the main wedding party including close relatives arrive on time
People who have agreed to participate in the ceremony should be seated towards the front of the Ceremony Room
If you have a tape or CD, check that it has been handed to the Superintendent Registrar with any instructions about which tracks to play
If you have arranged for someone to take official photographs or to video the ceremony this individual must agree with the Superintendent Registrar where they stand.

The Ceremony

The Superintendent Registrar responsible for conducting your ceremony will discuss the actual wording and content with you before the day. When everyone is assembled the Superintendent Registrar will welcome your guests and proceed with the ceremony. To comply with marriage laws you and your partner will need to repeat certain legal declarations through which you will be guided by the Superintendent Registrar. (See Short Extract from a Typical Ceremony) The remainder of your ceremony may be personalised in a number of ways including:

individual declarations or commitments to each other
exchanging of rings
reading of poetry or prose
musical interludes

Signing the Register

Once the declarations have been completed the Superintendent Registrar will pronounce you Husband and Wife. You will then be asked to sign the official Register followed by your Witnesses and finally by the Superintendent Registrar.

Time will be allowed for photographs to be taken with you and your spouse signing the Marriage Register. The Marriage Certificate will be produced by the Registrar and presented to you.

You and your guests will then move on to the next part of your day.

Short Extract from a typical ceremony in Devon

The Bride is escorted into the room where the Groom and guests have already gathered. The Superintendent Registrar, who will conduct the ceremony, welcomes the wedding party and continues with

"Do you ___ freely take ___ here present to be your lawful wedded wife ? I do

Will you love, respect and stand by her throughout all the circumstances of your lives together ? I will

(the Bride repeats the above to the Groom)

I am now going to ask you to declare each in turn that there are no legal reasons why you should not be married, repeat after me

(the couple then choose one of the following declarations)

I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I ___ may not be joined in matrimony to ___.

I declare that I know of no legal reason why I ___ may not be joined in marriage to ___ .
(the couple must also say at some time during the ceremony)

I call upon these persons here present to witness that I, ___ do take thee, ___ to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband)"

Secular poetry or personal readings together with musical interludes will be discussed with you and incorporated into the ceremony to enhance the event and make it a memorable occasion.

North Devon is one of the most attractive areas of the country and regularly attracts large numbers of visitors every year. It is no surprise that more and more couples are choosing to come here to "tie the knot".
